With the humid weather, the mosquitoes are back. Gilbert Buntinx and Wim Cosemans, residents of Hasselt, have a solution for this with their startup, Mosqisafe. “Our mosquito traps mimic body odor and attract mosquitoes from an area of up to 3,000 m² to our system.”
“Mosquitoes are annoying, they bite, and they also spread diseases. Meanwhile, even the West Nile virus has appeared in the Benelux. Based on that observation, we founded Mosqisafe,” the duo says. They have already conducted successful tests with their devices at hospitals and even at De Schorre in Boom to reduce the mosquito nuisance at Tomorrowland. “The devices have also proven their worth in tackling the mosquitoes that spread bluetongue disease among ruminants,” says Gilbert Buntinx.
Body Odor
The devices—available in various sizes—naturally generate the signals that attract mosquitoes. “Think of body odor, sweat, and other scents. Scents that humans can’t smell, but mosquitoes can. Using UV lamps, fans, and only natural attractants, mosquitoes are lured in and trapped. A fan system sucks them up, after which they die from dehydration. That’s how you protect your patio, garden, and property from mosquitoes,” adds Cosemans.
Eco-friendly products
How much do Mosqisafe devices cost? “The smallest patio model, which runs on a battery or solar panels, costs 130 euros. We also have intermediate models, leading up to this device, which costs just over 1,900 euros. It’s good to know that we use only eco-friendly products and do not use pesticides or biocides. Mosqisafe is the only company in Belgium that offers such devices,” they emphasize.
